My mother had kept every certificate, letter, and land document in a series of plastic bags for thirty years. I booked the home visit not knowing what to expect. Nadia spent about two and a half hours working through everything with us — she was very calm about the messiness of it all. We ended up with a printed inventory page that actually makes sense, and a labelled folder for each category. We found two documents my mother had not seen in over a decade.

We did the Heritage Index Workshop as a family — me, my two siblings, and my father. It was actually quite a nice experience, even if it took longer than expected because we kept stopping to talk about particular items. The facilitator was patient. One thing I had not anticipated was how different each of us remembered where things were kept. The binder at the end was a shared reference we could all agree on. Would recommend for families with older parents.

I want to be clear about what Vestige is — they are not a legal service, which I already knew before booking. What I needed was someone to help me catalogue what my late father had kept. The inventory visit did exactly that. I now have a clear list of what exists and where it is. Sorting out what to do with each item was my own responsibility afterwards, but having the list made that process much more manageable.

We enrolled in the Heritage Records Programme because my family had records in three languages — Mandarin, English, and Malay — and a lot of very old photographs with no labels. Zulkifli was thorough. The scanning checklist included in the programme was something I had not thought to ask for but ended up being very useful. The handbook at the end is something I think my children will be glad to have one day.

Good experience overall. The home visit was efficient and the folder kit is well-made — not the kind of thing you could easily put together yourself. My only minor note is that I had hoped to get a digital version of the inventory, but the printed format is the standard output. That said, the printed page is clear enough that I scanned it myself afterwards. Service does what it says it will do.

Booked the Heritage Index Workshop for my parents' 40th anniversary — a bit of an unusual gift, but my mother had been talking for years about wanting to organise everything before it was too late. We did the workshop at the SS23 premises. It was a calm environment, nothing clinical about it. My parents enjoyed it. The binder they came home with has already become something my mother references regularly.

Three Families, Three Situations
Case Study 01 — Inventory Visit
Situation
A family in Subang Jaya discovered after their father's passing that no one knew where his original property titles and insurance documents were kept. Materials were distributed across four rooms in the family home.
What Vestige Did
Conducted a Family Records Inventory Visit with two adult children present. Working through each room, the session identified 47 separate documents, organised them into eight labelled categories, and produced a single printed inventory page.
Outcome
All previously unlocated documents were accounted for within one session. The family was then able to bring relevant items to the professionals of their choice without further searching. Duration: one afternoon.
"We spent a year not knowing what we had. This took three hours."
Case Study 02 — Heritage Index Workshop
Situation
A three-generation Chinese-Malaysian family in Shah Alam wanted to consolidate their family materials before the grandparents relocated to a smaller apartment. Materials included documents in Mandarin and English, photographs from the 1960s onwards, and several items with uncertain origins.
What Vestige Did
Facilitated a full-day Heritage Index Workshop with five family members. The session built a heritage index structured by document type and material origin. Uncertain photographs were noted as such, with family-provided context recorded where available.
Outcome
Family left with a working draft binder and labelled cover sheet covering 12 material categories. The binder moved with the grandparents and has since been referenced by three other family members. Duration: one full day.
"The photographs alone made it worth the day. My aunt knew who everyone was. We did not."
Case Study 03 — Heritage Records Programme
Situation
An extended Indian-Malaysian family in Klang with materials accumulated over 60 years — property records, personal correspondence, certificates in multiple languages, and a collection of family photographs spread across three households.
What Vestige Did
Enrolled the family in the Heritage Records Programme. Over six weeks and five sessions, the programme covered full inventory across all three households, document labelling, scanning checklists for the highest-priority materials, and two family-meeting agenda sessions to agree on storage responsibilities.
Outcome
Family received a 38-page heritage handbook covering all three households, with scanning completed for 23 priority items. Family meeting templates were used to agree on a shared storage location for originals. Duration: 5 sessions over 6 weeks.
"The handbook is the clearest record our family has ever had of where things are. It took effort, but it was the right amount of effort."

Ready to See What Your Family Has?
Every household we have worked with came in knowing something was missing. Most left surprised by how much they had — and how much clearer things felt once it was labelled.
